Pre-Conference Field Trip: Auckland-Whakatāne-Ruatōria-Gisborne

8:20am:  Assemble at University of Auckland Campus, 28 Princes St. (Corner of Alfred and Princes). What3Words: good.petal.bench

We will be travelling in three 12-seater vans, stopping for lunch at bakery/cafe stops along the way. The route is shown on the map below.

Stop 1: Kaihere Lookout over the Hauraki Plains/Kerepehi Fault

Stop 2: Matamata – Coffee and possible hobbit sightings

Stop 3: Mamaku Plateau and the ignimibrite tors

Stop 4: Kuirau Park geothermal area

Stop 5: Lunch in Rotorua by Tikitapu/Blue Lake

Stop 6: Rangitaiki River and note Edgecumbe Fault displacement of the river bed

Stop 7: Edgecumbe Fault, flood history in Edgecumbe

Staying at the Whakatane Holiday Park

Stop 1: Kohi Pt Lookout: coastal and tectonic geomorphology

Stop 2: Ohiwa and Waiotahe estuaries

Stop 3: Motu River mouth

Stop 4: Raukokore Church, Lunch at Waihau Bay

Stop 5: Mouth of the Waipu River

Welcoming at Taumata o Mihi (Rauru) Marae (Lodging for the night)

We will provide further guidance on the Powhiri, and what to expect at Rauru. We will be guests of the local iwi (Ngāti Porou). Sleeping arrangements will be communal, with foam mattresses and sheets provided.

Stop 1: Tapuaeroa, Waiorongomai Rivers

Stop 2: Landslide dam at Tokomaru Bay

Stop 3: Tolaga Bay

Stop 4: Wainui Beach
